Dr. Simon Bouffler is Deputy Director, Radiation Protection Sciences at the Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards Directorate (RCE) of United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Dr. Bouffler graduated from the University of Southampton with a BSc in biology in 1981. He went on to complete a PhD in Southampton in 1984 on the modulation of chemical genotoxicity by cadmium. Between 1985 and 1990 he carried out research on DNA repair and mutagenesis at the University of Cambridge. He joined the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) in 1991, becoming Group Leader in 1994, Department Head in 2003 and interim Deputy Director in 2013. During this period NRPB became part of the Health Protection Agency (2005-2013), Public Health England (2013-2022) and now UKHSA.
Dr. Bouffler has been involved in several European and international research projects both as a participant and in lead roles. His main research interests are in mechanisms of radiation-associated diseases reflected in over 130 peer reviewed publications. He is Vice-Chair of the International Commission on Radiological Protection and member of its Main Commission.
Dr. Bouffler has been representative of the United Kingdom to UNSCEAR since 2016 and member of the UK delegation since 2006.
Mr Antony Bexon is Head of Radiation Assessments Department at the Radiation, Chemicals and Environmental Hazards Directorate (RCE) of United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Mr Bexon graduated with a BSc in Environmental Science from the University of East Anglia in 1996. He joined what was the National Radiological Protection Board in 1997, becoming Department Head in 2014.
Mr Bexon’smain work areas are concerned with the assessment of the impacts of natural and artificial radionuclides primarily on members of the public in planned, existing and emergency exposure situations and the consideration of aspects of patient safety during medical exposures.
Mr Bexon has been responsible fora number of major projects, including those for the European Commission and for UK Government Departments and Agencies. He aIso has wide experience of collaborating with other organisations, for example the UK Committee on the Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE) and international activities such as being part of the UK delegation to OECD’s NEA CRPPH and member of the CRPPH bureau, as well as a member of the European NERIS platform on radiological emergency preparedness, response and recovery as part of the Management Board and chair of the R&D committee.
Mr Bexon has been a delegate of the United Kingdom to UNSCEAR since 2015 and is currently its alternate representative. He is also the UK National Contact Person for UNSCEAR surveys and a member of the ad hoc group on sources and exposure.
